Whenever I suffer from heartburn and acid reflux fortunately I like most people find it to be an unusual event that rarely occurs. Heartburn is a very uncomfortable and unpleasant sensation that affects many people and some experience the symptoms quite regularly.

When I get a bout of heartburn it is usually only for a short period of time and it goes
almost as quickly as it arrives. I am lucky though and other people find that the symptoms of heartburn are a regularly occurring feeling of discomfort and a burning sensation in the throat and chest that it becomes a normal event and they learn how to deal with it.

It is said that the cause of heartburn experienced by so many people is a result of failure in the normal operation of the small sphincter valve which fails to close in the correct way when it should. This valve is supposed to remain closed to prevent acidic stomach gases rising up and causing damage the lining of your throat but sometimes for various reasons it can fail and the result is heartburn caused by these acidic gases rising to cause discomfort and damage to your throat lining. This explains the burning sensation we experience when suffering from acid reflux or heartburn symptoms.

If this situation were allowed to continue for a long period of time it might damage the throat lining but temporary heartburn should not usually lead to prolonged health worries. It is important to get a diagnosis and treatment from a trained medical practitioner to be sure about your health and be guided accordingly.

We do have some practical options which may help relieve the symptoms of heartburn and reduce the frequency of attacks. Occurrences of heartburn and acid reflux seem to happen to me if I am feeling tired so it seems logical managing to have plenty of good sleep helps a lot.

I often read that there are foods that many people find lead to periods when heartburn is more likely to occur and it may be that reduction of coffee may cut down the number of attacks as may reducing spicy food intake. It may be that smoking can prove to be a factor in heartburn and I expect this is due to the smoke having an effect on the throat lining on top of all the other things that may affect it.

As with so many conditions and health issues a more balanced and healthy diet together with a regime of exercise and always trying to be sure to have a good nights sleep all goes to help. Living in a healthy way and eating properly may cut down the effect of heartburn as well as cutting back the number of bouts you experience of this and also reduce the severity of the symptoms of acid reflux you suffer.
